Trevor de Souza,
Head Coach & Founder

My first career as an adult was in IT, but my passion was always in health in fitness. I was growing increasingly frustrated with my unfulfilling job and I’ve always believed that if you don’t like something you should change it. So in 2012, just after completing my Masters in IT, I decided to call it quits. I opened my first fitness facility and traded predictability and job security for passion and adventure.

My own fitness journey has taught me that what you do outside the gym impacts what you achieve inside it. After years of training hard in CrossFit, the impact of intense circuit training, the competitive group environment and lack of knowledge about good lifestyle habits took a toll on me.

I was injured, exhausted and looking for a better way. Working with an OPEX coach brought me back to the life I loved. The focus on sleep, stress management and gut health was unlike anything I’d experienced in the fitness industry, and in 2017 I successfully completed the SEALFIT Kokoro Camp, a 50 hour military style training camp designed to test your mind, body and spirit.

My purpose in life is to share everything that I know and to set a positive example to my twin boys. I want them to know that if you have a goal, and you plan for it, work for it and surround yourself with a positive community, anything is possible.

When I was a kid, my parents valued education and study over physical fitness and sports. That didn’t deter me from learning everything I could about my true passion, which at the time was Martial Arts. I spent hours every day reading books about everything I could get my hands on, knowing that once school was finished, I’d be able to put what I learnt into practice.

Once I had time to train, I practiced Muay Thai, Boxing, Judo and Wrestling, striving for mastery in all of them. My studious mind and beginner’s mentality helped me advance in these disciplines quickly, and I realised that my parent’s insistence on books over sports gave me a unique advantage in life.

I decided to devote myself to learning, practicing on myself, and passing on my knowledge to others through personal training. I love helping people, and seeing them have an ‘aha’ moment makes my day. Coaching at OPEX means that I get to work with people closely, without them having to spend big on 1 on 1 PT sessions. For me, it’s been the perfect balance of helping people reach their goals, and growing my own skills and knowledge daily.

6 years ago I was unhappy and dissatisfied with my health. I was studying, working and trying to fit in a social life, and I felt I was way too tired for someone in their early 20s. I didn’t like how I looked or how I felt. I decided it was time for a change. In my pursuit for happiness in myself and in my future, I signed up to a gym and booked some sessions with a personal trainer. Little did I know that this experience would pave the way for my current career as a Floor Coach at OPEX.

A lot of PTs come from sporting backgrounds, having always been pretty fit and living an active lifestyle from a young age. My path was different. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realised how important an active lifestyle is to your overall life satisfaction. Having been on both sides of the equation, as a client to a PT and as a trainer myself, I love that my journey means that I can relate to the people inside our gym on a deeper level.

Health and fitness has the power to change lives, and I’m so grateful that this is what I get to do every day. Knowing that people’s I’m helping people improve their lives gets me out of bed every morning, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next.

As odd as it sounds, the fact that what I eat can affect how I feel was a revelation to me at first, and this wonder and curiosity has been the driving force in my life ever since.

I spent years trying to lose weight, jumping from the latest fad diet to the newest exercise trend, all to be left frustrated and unsatisfied in how I looked and felt. I knew there was a better way, and I immersed myself in learning all I could about nutrition and exercise, eventually quitting my corporate job at a bank to study Food Science at University.

Being a full time student and full time mum isn’t easy, but knowing that I’m setting a positive example of health, fitness and pursuing your dreams to my twin boys makes it all worth it. I love working with people who’ve been sold the quick-fix lie by the fitness industry, teaching them that making positive lifestyle choices has a big impact on how you feel about yourself.

I want to be the person I would have loved to have by my side when I started. I want to support people, and genuinely care for them, because I see it as the only way to make a real impact on as many people as possible.

These days I wake up excitedly at 5am, knowing that I’m helping people improve their lives through fitness. Nothing makes me happier than seeing people succeed in our gym. I feel that as a coach, it’s my responsibility to constantly evolve, learn and chase goals of my own. I want to lead by example, and show people that you can do anything you set your mind to, if you have the right attitude and support network.

My own fitness journey has taught me that what you do outside the gym impacts what achieve inside it, big time. After years of training hard in CrossFit, the impact of intense circuit training, the competitive group environment and lack of knowledge around good lifestyle habits took a toll on me. Sharing my knowledge and lifting the health of people in Western Sydney is my greatest purpose in life. I look forward to meeting and impacting as many people as I can, and helping them live a more inspired life.
